Music preview cast crew dvd Movie Review In New York City, an estranged couple who witness a murder are relocated to small-town Wyoming as part of a witness-protection program.

A bickering New York couple on the verge of divorce attempt to salvage their marriage after witnessing a murder and being relocated to Wyoming under the Witness Protection Plan. Meryl and Paul Morgan (Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant) have all the money a couple could want. It’s love they’re running short on. Upon witnessing a contract killing and being targeted by the triggerman, the couple find themselves at the mercy of the feds, who hastily send them packing for an extended stay in the Rockies. Could a peaceful life away from the city be just the thing to bring Meryl and Paul back together, or will the deafening silence of nature only serve to amplify the bickering couple’s painful peccadillos and drive them further apart than ever before? Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen, and Wilford Brimley co-star in a comedy from writer/director Marc Lawrence (Miss Congeniality, Music and Lyrics)

Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant in their roles as a separated married couple, Meryl Morgan and Paul Morgan, are about to continue the divorce route. To make the plot of this predictable romantic comedy plausible, Paul is the loser who is trying to get back into the good graces of his wife, since, after all, all he did to ruin the marriage was to have a one-night stand. Is this grounds for a breakup? No matter. Hopefully a critic is not giving away the plot to say that in the old, crusty traditions of rom-coms, the parties are kept apart until the glorious and, in this case sappy, conclusion.

“Morgans” is a fish out of water comedy with a few laughs, once you get by Sarah Parker’s nasality and Hugh Grant’s Mayfair accent. Your attendance to this movie is not unpleasant and you’re wasting not even two hours of your valuable time, so why not check it out? You’ll discover that the characters are not stereotypical blue-state, red-state folks from Venus and red-planet Mars, but more or less sympathetic. Director Marc Lawrence plays to the realities of life in the New York City versus live in the sticks.

After Meryl, a hot real estate agent, and Paul, a successful lawyer, agree to meet for dinner to talk over their marital difficulties, they walk right into a murder scene, noting the murder of an arms dealer while spotting the face of the killer, Vincent (Michael Kelly), who in turns spots them and is determined to wipe out the two witnesses. How does he know who the witnesses are? Conveniently Meryl’s picture is on the cover of New York Magazine that week. So into the witness protection program go the uneasy couple, far away to Sarah-Palin in rural Wyoming, where she will learn to milk a cow and shoot like Annie Oakley and he will jog and ride a horse and complain that the nights are so quiet “I can hear my cells dividing.”

The real stars of the picture, though they do not have the highest barrier to jump. are Sam Elliott in the role of U.S. Marshall Clay and Mary Steenburgen as his wife Emma. Sympathetically no rednecks, the Wyoming couple have no desire even to visit New York, and why should they? Life in Wyoming even without Zabar’s is fun: you can ride horses, shoot tin cans while buying as many guns as you want, spray repellent at a bear about to charge one lawyer, watch a horseman ride at the rodeo turning somersaults on her equine partner, see people throw off raging bulls within eight seconds, and on Saturday you can dance your butt away instead of holing up with the New York Times. And the John Wayne movies which form a steady diet of viewing on TV may be less predictable than “Did You Hear about the Morgans?” Wilford Brimley has a comic turn as Earl Granger, a fellow who tells Meryl off when she as much as suggests that he blow his cigarette smoke the other way: “We’re not fond of city people telling us how to live,” is the deserved reply.

The lesson here is that if you’re a well-to-do married couple with some problems, don’t even think of going to Barcelona, Paris or Rome where you’ll be in New York all over again except that the language may be different. Head out to the wide open spaces, breathe in the pure air, see actual stars. Nature’s aphrodisiac works best.
